About Girls Running With Bulls

“The roar of hooves pounded behind me. A sea of bodies pressed into each other, against me, swaying — offering little air or room from the stifling morning sun. The red scarf wound around my throat constricted airway control as my heart thumped in my chest. Yet, the thumping felt outside my body – until I realized it wasn’t my heart – but the clang of cobblestones from the beasts. Six of them twisting and turning their muscular, powerful torsos — nostrils flared, shaking the foundations of this narrow street. The impatient throng stirred and I moved with them. This time my heart was really pounding, as I picked up my heels. El toro was close.. rumbling towards us. My lethargic limbs finally woke, roused by adrenaline. Run for life, from death and for the exhilaration. My vision filled with white shirts blurring past me. Crowds above us dangled from upper balconies like over grown bougainvillea, yelling and snapping photographs. Soon they would chant, “Correr! Correr!” All I could do was keep running.“

In July 2012, five women will hold aloft the sword of challenge to run with the bulls in Pamplona, Spain.

Of course this is something that our Basque friends will watch with fascination. A true victory will be had if you can convince some of the local “girls” to run with you.

If you want to discuss the fiesta or the encierro, I would be glad to help. Feel free to email me!
